Why does the shell have an ocean sound?

If you put the shell over your ear, you will hear a sound very similar to the one produced by the ocean.

There is a common myth that it is the sound of the blood vessels in your ears having blood pumped through them, but it's not true. Any such sound would be far too small to be noticeable even when reverberated.

The shell acts as a resonating chamber, bouncing surrounding sounds back and forth, jumbling and amplifying them.
